Åland is home to around 27,700 people, despite 88% of it being made up of water. 90% of Åland's population live on the "Main Island" (which is about 70% of the total land area) and the rest live on one of the smaller islands, of which there are around 6,500 (islands and skerries), however only 65 are populated.

Åland are one of the 15 founding members of the Island Games, and have hosted the event twice.
