Locatated off the coast of Central Norway, Hitra is the bigger than it's neighbouring island Froya at 707 sq. km. Since the world war, both of the islands population has gradually reduced to around 4,300 on each island, giving them serious financial difficulties for a long time.

Hitra is one of the 15 founding members of the International Island Games Association and has attended all but three of the games (1991, 1993 and 1995)
