The Western Isles are a long chain of islands 55km off the west coast of Scotland and are sometimes referred to as the Outer Hebrides. The Western Isles land mass is 3,070 km squared with a population of about 26,500 people.

The first Island Games that the Western Isles took part in was 2005 on Shetland, having been elected to join the Internation Island Games Association during Guernsey 2003.
